The Stage Theory
This theory was originally devised by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross. She was able to observe similar responses that were triggered from person to person. With her observations, she laid out grief in five steps:
Each stage can be undergone at any time. However, only anger and depression tend to occur after the acceptance stage. Additionally, each stage can be experienced multiple times. Certain events may trigger a stage to reoccur.

- Denial - This stage is the thoughts that occur that are contrary to reality.
- Anger/Resentment - This stage is simply anger or strong dissatisfaction towards the situation.
- Bargaining - This stage is when one may bargain with God trying to change the situation.
- Depression - The realization of reality that puts the holder into a state of depression.
- Acceptance - The point at which the holder can start to move forward with reality.
